Your guide to becoming a citizen of our fair Gainesville, not just a consumer...
1 Shop weekly at your local farmers market or farm stand. Visit downtown Gainesville's Union Street Farmers' Market.
2 Join a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) and get weekly deliveries of the season's harvest. Find local CSAs at Local Harvest.
3 Buy from local grocers and co-ops committed to stocking local food, such as Ward's Supermarket.
4 Support restaurants and food vendors that buy locally produced food.
5 Preserve food from the season — freeze, can, dry — to eat later in the year.
6 Throw a "Locally-Grown Party" and serve all local food.
7 Grow your own food in your yard or community garden plot.
8 Visit local farmers and "u-picks".
9 Ask your grocer or favorite restaurant what local foods they carry.
10 Support the places and people I describe right here on Gainesville Homegrown!
Okay Lauren, so now I am computer stalking you. I found you on facebook and left you a message, and now I found your blog. What a cool idea for a blog! I wish I could go around eating at all of those spots with you...you always have a knack for knowing where to eat! Remember when we tried to eat at the hemmingway rest. in Spain and we had to eat next door at some place with a rude name instead? What a fun time. Keep up the good work here on the blog. I plan to follow it and see how things are going for you. I tried to grow a garden here as part to eat local but it has failed miserably. I need to amend the soil and do raised beds...my land is too low. I did get some nice jalapenos, though!
ReplyDeleteOh, sorry! The above comment is from Heather Serra Taylor. Love ya Lauren!
